5 Tips For A Small Laundry Room
Your laundry area gets a lot of use. It is command central. Without it running smoothly you and youe family will not be ready for the coming week. So how about if we try to take the frustration out of doing laundry in a small space. One option is to add laundry room cabinets, but I am sure you can be more creative with your small space to improve laundry room organization.
What do I mean by a small space? I am not referring to a large laundry room like we see in many new homes and those beautiful remodeling websites. Rather I am referring to spaces that could be laundry closets, small area in the garage, a corner in the basement or one of those walk-through rooms that double as a laundry area and walkway; the kind with a door at each end.

Here are some tips that can make your round of laundry a little more enjoyable.
Add Cabinets
With the exception of the laundry closet that has a stackable washer/dryer most laundry areas can benefit from overhead laundry room cabinets for storage. Standard 12″ wall cabinets will work but they can be a little hard to reach so it might be better if you can find 24″ deep cabinets (FYI, these are the ones that typically would go over the frig in the kitchen). And if you are fortunate enough to have extra width in the room consider adding a tall cabinet; the same as a pantry or linen cabinet. But, no matter the type of cabinet you install they are a perfect places to store detergents, dryer sheets, and cleaning supplies in an out-of-the-way space safe from children.
Improve Organization
Who doesn’t need to hang up clothes as you are taking them out of the dryer? I’m sure you are tired of having them fall off the door casing or the nearest hook. So why not add a clothes rod just above the washer dryer. It can be hung between two wall cabinets, between a wall cabinet and a pantry cabinet, or between the cabinet and a wall. No cabinets then use the same brackets like in your closet for your clothes which may come with a shelf support bracket. If you can include a shelf over the rod, then do so. You’ll appreciate the extra storage space and improved laundry room organization.
Add some color and pattern
No matter the type of space (closet, cubby, corner, or alcove) you still have the opportunity to add some personality. The walls can be a light and lively color. The flooring can be complimentary tile, LVP or rug. The cabinets can be there own complimentary color. Consider improving the lighting. Think of something like this combination below. Have some fun with it.
Add a Countertop Surface
If you have the space for a countertop surface that would be a great addition. But what if you have one of those walk through rooms, it may seem like you don’t have near enough space for a surface. Then it would be time to consider creating a fold down table attached to the wall opposite the wash/dryer. For lighter weight options consider looking for a table top surface that is about 3/4″ thick attaching it to the wall with a piano hinge. Oh my, I just did a search for “folding table mounted to the wall” and came up with more than 10 great choices. Lots of inspiration for either making one yourself or buying one to install.
Be Organized
I love the phrase, “A Place for Everything, and Everything in its Place”. Words to live by. If you want to be more efficient, less frustrated and become more productive then adopt this attitude. It takes way less time to put things away the first time then it does to find it it each time you need it. Plus teaching kids to be organized and efficient is a terrific life lesson. Just think what you can do with laundry room cabinets, hanger bar, shelf, baskets and a countertop surface. With better laundry room organization you’ll be unstoppable.
Take a moment to look at your current laundry space and envision it as a brighter, cleaner, efficient and better organized space. Caught you, you were smiling. As you imagined there are some great possibilities. Then commit to yourself, make this your next DIY remodel project.
