1) Kitchen Remodel – How long does it take?
Depending on the size of your project and the overall scope of work the typical DIY kitchen can take from 1 week to 4 weeks to complete. With that in mind, it’s best to create a project calendar by creating a list of each step that needs to be completed. Then add the amount of time needed to complete the task. Remember that some installation steps may take longer than expected so allow for it and surprises are part of every project so plan for them also. Because of this, it is best to not schedule a party for the big reveal on the last day of your initial project schedule. Wait until the project is complete to schedule the unveiling.
2) Can I Use My Kitchen During the Remodel?
You’ll realize quickly on day one, Demo Day, that there won’t be anything left in the kitchen. At a minimum you’ll have removed all the cabinets, countertops, and plumbing fixtures and be looking at drywall. Other DIYers will have taken everything done to the studs. So now the kitchen will not be usable.
Appliances will be relocated to an area for storage or removal. Keep the refrigerator and microwave someplace convenient since they will still be used. Set up a temporary surface for food preparation. You’ll need someplace to get water, wash dishes, and make coffee. Consideration needs to be given to storage of furniture, food, cookware and other items in your kitchen; you’ll need some boxes. Be prepared, you’ll be camping out in your own home.
3) Take into Account the Construction Details
If you are doing plumbing make sure you have all the necessary items. Electrical changes can be tricky, have you spoken to an electrician. Several vendors are involved in a kitchen remodel so confirmation of product availability and timing on any services they are providing is required. If you are working with a contractor for any of the work confirm that he has time and you are on the schedule. Is your project large enough to need permits, best to check. Have you done your research on the proper construction sequence for installations?
Are there any environmental or health related concerns that could impact your project? Weather, especially severe storms, will sidetrack a project. Material and manufacturing delays occur during different times of the year, especially year end. Holidays will slow down the work progress. Large community health concerns like Covid-19 can put a big damper on several aspects of your project. A kitchen remodel is a good time to over prepare, leave nothing to chance.
Adequate preparation definitely saves time, money and frustration. Remember, it isn’t just about starting your kitchen remodel, it’s about finishing the kitchen remodel.
4) Is There a Better Time To Remodel My Kitchen?
The answer is no, maybe, it all depends. Do you have kids? If so it might be best to tackle the kitchen project when they can be outside to play and for meals. It is also not a good idea to take your kitchen out of commission right before the holiday that you are hosting. Is your area impacted by weather? Take into consideration having to make trips to the store, work on the patio or driveway, the need for kids and pets to be outside. Is your current work schedule going to allow for a pretty intense DIY project? It’s best to be realistic about your expectations when it comes to the time needed to complete a kitchen remodel.
5) Coordinate All Your Purchases in Advance
It cannot be stressed enough, how important it is, to order all your materials before starting the project. This simple step will save you lots of headaches and money. However, this does mean you will be coordinating all the deliveries and need to store everything. Make space for your cabinets, countertops, hardware, backsplash tile, hardware, appliances, sinks, faucets, and any other items being purchased for your kitchen remodel. Having all your products on-site will prevent delays. Materials take up a lot of room, so be prepared by clearing out a large space.
The next step is to track and be available for deliveries. I recommend requesting a 1/2 hour precall on the day of delivery so you can be sure to be there when the truck arrives because missing a delivery can cause a lot of issues. Check all products for damage after delivery, also check that it is the right item and the correct color. Maintain an inventory of all items received. You are almost ready; starting your kitchen remodel is just around the corner.
6) Minimize Extra Work and Save Money
First, have plenty of Paper and plastic products (plates, utensils, cups, etc.) on hand since your dishwasher and sink will be disconnected. Second, your Bar-B-Q grill and microwave will be your new best friends because the stove has been stowed away. Third, organize kitchen items for easy access to avoid the frustration of unpacking boxes to find what you need. Forth, keep your storage area and food preparation area clean and organized. Finally, prepare lists for grocery and remodel shopping so you can combine store visits into a single outing. By being more efficient you will eliminate frustration and wasted time, ultimately saving money.
7) Consider the Kids & Pets
With all the planning and preparation that goes into a kitchen remodel it is easy to lose track of those who may not be giving input on the project – the kids and pets – so take a moment to consider their needs. For kids it is a great idea to set up an area for them to work and play so they can be out of the construction traffic and mess. Then, to keep pets safe and comfortable, create a safe space for them away from the work area and noise.
Construction is disruptive for everyone so a little fore thought goes a long way. Lack of preparation inevitably causes more work for you and creates stress for the family. Armed with this information you’ll be starting your kitchen remodel like a pro.
